Making a Modern Farmhouse

Making a Modern Farmhouse

Gone are the days when the word “farmhouse” automatically brings to mind lemon yellow walls and barn animal kitsch. Thanks to this decade’s deep love for nostalgia and top-tier influencers like Chip and Joanna Gaines, the Modern Farmhouse has undergone a thorough rebranding, making it this year’s “it” aesthetic.

Search “Modern Farmhouse” on any platform and you’ll find a cache of immaculately designed kitchens, bathrooms, and living spaces. Keep researching, and you might notice that these spaces are actually quite diverse, but contain just a few key elements that help them emulate and fall under the larger “farmhouse” umbrella. In this blog, we’ll outline those elements you’ll need to keep in mind as you update your home!

Let’s start with the kitchen:

Know. Your. Neutrals. We can’t stress enough how important it is to keep a consistent color palette that adds to the flow of the space, instead of detracting from it. A good rule of thumb is to follow the 60-30-10 rule. Choose a neutral tone (white and cream are ever-popular options) to fill up most of your space. Next, pick cabinetry and other furnishings in earthy tones like tans, greys, or rusts. Lastly, pick a slightly bolder accent color; we think adding greenery to a space is the perfect way to create contrast naturally!

When picking hardware, consider if you would like a low-contrast or high-contrast look. Low contrast might involve rose gold or copper hardware, whereas black or dark brown would create high-contrast. Federal Brace’s handle and pull line includes beautiful, matte-black options that look especially stunning in kitchens.

On to the living room:

How beautiful and soothing is this above space? Both wood and natural lighting have been proven to promote calmness and increase feelings of wellbeing. It’s no wonder then, that they’ve become staple elements in Modern Farmhouse spaces.

To easily increase the amount of natural light in your living room, opt for light linen or cotton curtains instead of heavier fabrics and colors. Incorporating mirrors will also reflect any available light, creating a brighter, more welcoming environment.

Use natural wood whenever you can to breathe life into your space and give it that timeless feel. Even using wood as an accent can be plenty - wooden corbels in particular are beautiful decorative elements that fit perfectly with the farmhouse look.

Lastly, the bathroom:

Let’s talk vanities: the floating vanity has been steadily increasing in popularity now that braces like the Atlas Floating Vanity Support have been created to easily handle serious loads. With a bucket or trough sink and thoughtfully curated hardware, the vanity area can easily become a statement in itself.

Once the foundation of the room has been created, make sure to keep comfort in mind! Plush pillows, cushioned bar stools, and cozy rugs can help complement and balance out the rigidity of any natural materials like wood or stone, or cement. By layering softer elements over hard ones, you’ll create a more luxurious looking space while enhancing the overall comfort level.

With these simple tips and suggestions in mind, we hope we’ve taken some of the guesswork out of designing a beautiful, modern farmhouse home that will be loved for years to come!
