Turn the Corner: Temporary to Permanent WFH Office Setup

As #SaferAtHome coronavirus precautions continue, 35+ major companies have now officially announced employees can work remotely long-term. Google, Uber, REI, Zillow, Twitter, Square, Microsoft, Reuters. Facebook, Salesforce, Amazon, Spotify, Hitachi, Coinbase, Mastercard, Indeed, Nielsen, Nationwide Insurance, American Express, Airbnb, Adobe, Aetna, Ancestry.com, Capital One, Gartner, Infosys, Paypal, Basecamp, Shopify, Siemens, Chegg, Smartsheet, The Hartford, Upwork, Zillow, and more  - now have large workforces that will be transitioning from temporary WFH setups to permanent home office spaces.

Employees want to work remotely too! According to a Global Workplace Analytics survey of employees working remotely during the pandemic, 73% note that they are very successful when working from home, and 86% say they feel “fully productive” working from their home office. And, of the 3,000 respondents, 76% want to continue working from home at least 2.5 days per week, on average. A similar and very recent survey by Business Insider found more than half of Americans want to continue working remotely while another two-thirds of companies are considering making their current work from home policies permanent. Companies large and small are recognizing the sustained benefits of remote employment and want to support their workers at home long-term.

Working from home offers many advantages, including the flexibility of setting your own schedule, saving time and money by eliminating your daily commute, etc. But, being successful in a home office requires creating a space that promotes efficiency in a non-traditional work environment. Long term success starts by defining a professional work area that separates your business from your personal life. Its location, lighting, ergonomics, and management of clutter are all important. Some companies are now providing stipends for their remote employees’ desks, chairs, and computers and are instituting regular allowances for WiFi and phone costs.

Changing times call for new approaches and several companies are leading the charge! At Google, workers can now expense up to $1,000 worth of work-from-home gear. Shopify and Twitter have followed suit and now also give their remote employees $1,000 for a home-office fund. The job marketplace employer Indeed, now reimburses its employees up to $500 for desks, chairs, or lighting in their home. Basecamp, a software company headquartered in Chicago, is now offering workers $1,000 to get their work station up and running at home, and textbook company Chegg now pays its remote workers’ monthly internet bill and gives them $500 for home office furnishings.
